In under a week, FCJHs swimming team’s season will be coming to an end. After an amazing season with the boys losing no meets and the girls only losing two, they swim county on 3/11. They will be swimming at Warren Central High School and competing for gold.
For more information on the season, we interviewed Brooklyn and Colby Sewell. The coaches are said to be very good, however there are no female coaches which could be a drawback for girl swimmers. Their practices differ from day to day but they most frequently do distance free which is swimming for long distances in an amount of time.
Brooklyn Sewell, an eighth grade swimmer, said, “If you’re interested in becoming a swimmer, talk to some of the swimmers and see if you have any connections or just join because we barely have any swimmers.”
In tryouts you do multiple different events such as fly, back, breast, free, and 25s. These are terms used by the swimmers but they are most commonly known as butterfly strokes, backstrokes, breaststrokes, freestyle (sometimes called the forward crawl), and 25 yards (1 lap down the pool, not back).
Another eighth grade swimmer, Colby Sewell, added, “We dislike Center Grove so much and they are so much better than us. We don’t even know if they are better or if they just have more people than us but most of the swimmers argue that it’s just because they have more people.”
Colby and Brooklyn are two of the top swimmers with the girls having Isabel (7th), Nora (6th), and Brooklyn (8th), and the girls having Victor (7th), Colby (8th), and Boyd (8th). Overall the swimmers seem to have amazing relationships along with very fun seasons and the swimmers all recommend you to join!
